Brisk Winds

October 3rd-4th

Being URI ultimate's first tournament of the fall season, the focus for the team was learning to play Ultimate the right way. URI split into a X/Y teams to ensure that new players would get quality game repetitions. With 19 teams competing, including strong New England and Metro East programs such as UCONN, BROWN and DARTMOUTH it was one of URI's most successful fall tournaments. The winds, as expected, were quite brisk, forcing many teams to resort to zone and junk looks.  In the most highly anticipated matchup of the weekend, the URI alumni team, Slap Grandma, took on the current roster.   After exchanging breaks, and one of the most original 5-yard chicken wing assists from Frankie Noonan, the alumni pulled away to win 13-10. Overall, Rhode Island X and Y finished 9th and 10th respectively in the field. Next, the A team prepared for Lemony Fresh.

Lemony Fall Tournament

October 10-11

With their home tournament behind them, RIUT stormed into beautiful Warwick, RI to take on other New England schools. The weather was unseasonably warm for mid-October in New England, being 65 degrees Fahrenheit with little to no wind. These conditions allowed URI to stretch the field against its competition, sweeping the competiton 4-0 on Saturday, beating CCSU, Brandeis, New Haven, and BUDA U-19. The first game Sunday morning proved to be the one that determined the victor of Lemony Fresh. URI played Bryant, who came off placing 3rd at Division III nationals last year. It was the most intense game of the weekend, URI conceded three breaks early to go down at half 8-4. During the second half, the clawed their way back into the game with two breaks of their own, making the score 10-9 Bryant. Unable to get one more break, Bryant took the game and the tournament. Going 7-0 on the weekend. URI finished in 2nd place with an overall record of 6-1, defeating WPI and Maine after the Bryant defeat. It was a successful weekend for URI, who was looking to hit their peak for Brown's annual Huck-a-Hunk tournament.

Brown Huck a Hunk of Burning Pumpkin

October 24-25

The fall season reached its climax in Portsmouth, Rhode Island as Brown hosted its annual Fall Huck-a-Hunk Tournament. The best teams in the Metro East and New England were invited, including 2015 5th place National contender, UMASS. URI began the weekend playing BROWN ALUMNI, who appeared to still be in their Halloween party costumes. Despite numerous sideline heckles, questionable field conditions, and general disobidience of the tournament rules, URI persevered to beat BROWN ALUMNI 15-13. Next up was BROWN, coming off their previous win, URI was ready for the challenge. BROWN came out hot and put URI on their heels, taking half 7-3, URI could not close the gap and lost the game 13-7. URI finished the day with their most exciting game of the season. Their opponent was BOSTON COLLEGE, who had already beaten BROWN earlier in the day. The game was back and forth, both offenses showed their explosiveness and executed very well. There were no breaks going into half 7-6 BC. URI tightened their defensive lines in order to get the crucial break, but was unable to do so. The game went to Universe point, and URI scraped out a victory with a layout score from the fastest man alive Nick Gomes. It was the first time URI had won two games on the first day at Huck-a-Hunk in recent memory, but due to score differential URI only achieved 3rd place in the pool.

Sunday morning came along and URI faced DARTMOUTH for its tournament life. DARTMOUTH came out of the gates very quickly, getting 3 breaks and taking half 8-4. URI was unable to close the defecit in the second half and fell to the eventual 4th place finisher at Huck-a-Hunk. Next up was NYU, who URI has repeatedly played on the second day at this tournament in the past. No love was lost between these two teams as they duked it out for placement. In the end, NYU squeezed past URI 15-12. Finally, came TUFTS, a program that is not used to playing for 11th on day 2 of a tournament. With weary legs and tired minds and a general light-heartedness to the game, URI fell to TUFTS 15-13. URI went winless on Sunday after an impressive Saturday. Their overall record for the fall season was 8-5.

They have a lot of work to do in the winter and early spring in order to reach their full potential and accomplish their goal at regionals this May.
